Install TWRP and Root OnePlus 5T on Android Oreo [OxygenOS Open Beta]

Prerequisites

  2. Make sure you have at least 50% of charge so that your phone won’t die in the middle of the process.

Necessary Downloads

  1. Blu_Spark TWRP Recovery for OnePlus 5T running Android Oreo: Download [Thanks, eng.stk]
  2. SuperSU for OnePlus 5T running Android Oreo: Download [Thanks, Chainfire]
  3. Magisk 15.0 for OnePlus 5T running Android Oreo: Download [Thanks, topjohnwu]

Note: Do not use Magisk 15.1 for this procedure. Download the Magisk 15.0 from the link above. 

Depending on how you want to root OnePlus 5T, you can either download the SuperSu Zip file or Magisk Zip file.

How to Install TWRP on OnePlus 5T Running Android Oreo

  1. Copy the downloaded SuperSU Zip file or Magisk Zip file to your phone.
  2. Copy the TWRP file to the folder where ADB and Fastboot are installed.
  3. Turn off your OnePlus 5T.
  4. Boot your OnePlus 5T into Fasboot mode > Press and hold the Volume Up Button + Power Button.
  5. Connect your phone to your PC via USB Cable.
  6. Open a command window on the folder where ADB and Fastboot are installed.
    1. Go to the folder where ADB and Fastboot are installed.
    2. Hold down Shift Key + Right Click > Select ‘Open Command Window here’ or ‘Open PowerShell Window here’.Install-TWRP-OnePlus-5T-Android-Oreo
  7. Execute the below command in the command window to see if your device is properly connected:
    fastboot devices
  8. Make sure the TWRP file is in the ADB folder. Execute the below command to install TWRP on your OnePlus 5T running Android Oreo:
    fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-x_blu_spark_v8.61-op5_op5t.img
  9. Do not restart your device upon installation. The procedure is not yet over. See the next section to know how to root your device.

How to Root OnePlus 5T running Android Oreo

Now, there are two ways root OnePlus 5T. One, by flashing SuperSU via TWRP and other, by flashing Magisk via TWRP.

Method 1: Root OnePlus 5T Running Android Oreo via SuperSU

Follow the below steps:

  1. Make sure you are in TWRP Recovery. If not:
    1. Turn off your OnePlus 5T.
    2. Boot your OnePlus 5T into TWRP Recovery > Press and hold the Volume Down Button + Power Button.
  2. Once you are in TWRP > Tap on ‘Install’ > Choose the SuperSU Zip file which you have downloaded from above > Swipe right to flash.
  3. Reboot your device.
  4. Done!

Method 2: Root OnePlus 5T Running Android Oreo via Magisk

Follow the below steps:

  1. Make sure you are in TWRP Recovery. If not:
    1. Turn off your OnePlus 5T.
    2. Boot your OnePlus 5T into TWRP Recovery > Press and hold the Volume Down Button + Power Button.
  2. Once you are in TWRP > Tap on ‘Install’ > Choose the Magisk Zip file which you have downloaded from above > Swipe right to flash.
  3. Reboot your device.
  4. Done!

This is the easiest way to install TWRP and Root OnePlus 5T Running Android Oreo-based OxygenOS.

  1. My device won’t leave the OnePlus logo screen on boot after installing the SuperSU Image. Can someone help?

    I used a Macbook, with Mac versions of the fastboot with ./, but this is what happened last time.

    I can boot to TWRP, and my computer can transfer files thru Android File Transfer, but I can’t boot to live OS.

    If anyone has some advice I would reallllllllly apprecieate it!!
