How to Root Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ on Android Oreo

While a lot of other Samsung flagships are left out in the cold, Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ have finally received the update. When you manually flash a firmware file, you lose the root access and TWRP Recovery which you had previously installed on your device. Prerequisites

  1. Make sure to take a complete backup of your device before proceeding.
  2. Download and install Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ USB drivers on your PC.
  3. Make sure that you have at least 60% of charge before proceeding.
  4. Enable USB Debugging on your device.

Please note that this method is only for the Exynos Variants of the device.

Steps to Root Galaxy S8/S8+ on Android Oreo

  1. Copy the downloaded Magisk Zip file to your phone.
  2. Boot your Galaxy S8/S8+ into Download mode:
    • Switch off your device. Wait for a few seconds to make sure the device is completely turned off.
    • Press and hold Bixby Button + Volume Down Button and then press the Power Button.
    • The phone will instantly boot into a blue screen. You can let go of all the buttons.
    • Now press the Volume Up button once to get into Download Mode.
    • Done!
  3. Extract the downloaded Odin zip file. Look for a file named ‘Odin3 v3.13.1.exe’. Double click to launch the tool.
  4. Connect your Galaxy S8/S8+ to your PC while it is still in download mode.
  5. In the Odin tool, ID: COM boxes will turn blue with the COM port number which indicates that the device is properly connected.
  6. In the Odin tool, click on AP Tab and select the TWRP Recovery TAR file.
  7. After adding the file, click on the Start button at the bottom.
  8. Wait until you still a PASS message on the tool.
  9. Disconnect your device. Reboot it into Recovery Mode:
    • Switch off your device. Wait for a few seconds to make sure the device is completely turned off.
    • Press and hold Bixby Button + Volume Up Button and then press the Power Button.
    • Let go of only the Power Button once the phone turns on while you are still holding down the Bixby and Volume Up Button.
    • Let go of all the buttons when you see the blue screen with Android logo.
    • Done!
  10. Tap on Install > Select the downloaded Magisk zip file > Flash it.
  11. Reboot!

Now you have successfully rooted your Galaxy S8/S8+ running Android Oreo. Once your phone finishes rebooting, look for an app named Magisk Manager. This is the app which is going to manage the root permissions for your device. This is the easiest way to root Galaxy S8/S8+ running Android Oreo.
