Get Android P Style Recent Apps Panel On Samsung Phones (No Root)

Since the inception of Android, the recent apps menu has been mostly remained untouched by Google and many popular OEMs around the globe. Natively, the recent apps are stacked vertically according to the chronology of their usage: the last used app appears first on the recent apps tray with each subsequent app appearing behind it according to their order in chronology. Samsung has followed the same design theme as laid down by Google and stacks the apps vertically one behind the order. Though this way of showing the recent apps is very practical and functional, people were bored of watching the same layout over and over again for a long time now. Google, to my surprise, revamped the recent apps panel in Android 9 Pie with apps stacked as cards and arranged horizontally with the recently used app appearing on the front and other apps will appear left to it according to their order of chronology.

Now, I am not sure if Samsung is going a similar layout in its build of Android Pie but I can help you if you are looking for a similar layout on your Samsung Galaxy device.

Steps To Getting Android P Styled Recent Apps Panel

To achieve this, We are going to take help of the Samsung Good Lock 2018 application. The Good Lock has been the official UI customization app for Samsung Galaxy Phones for a long time now. It was retired with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S8 but out of nowhere, it appeared on the Galaxy App Store a couple of months ago. And this time it brings some key nifty features like One Hand Operations+, Task Changer, Edge Touch, Edge Lighting + and ClockFace which I wish different OEMs to implement in their respective user interface as well. The Good Lock app brings some impressive and amazing customization options for anyone who likes to customize their phone’s user interface. So without further adieu, let me get into the tutorial.

Make sure your device runs on Samsung Experience 9.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo firmware.

  1. Download and install the Good Lock 2018 apk file from the Galaxy Apps Store. Make sure not to misunderstand between the Google Play Store and the Galaxy Apps Store.
  2. Once the installation is complete, open the app and grant all the required permissions.
  3. From different menus appearing on the home screen of Good Lock, tap on “Task Changer.” You will be asked to download the task changer module/plugin for  Good Lock 2018, download and install it.
  4. Once that is complete, open the Good Lock app again and toggle on “Task Changer.”

Congratulations! You just successfully replaced the traditional Recent Apps Panel of your Samsung Galaxy Phone with a new layout.

You can further customize your recent apps panel by selecting the kind of scroll effect you want between the following options:

Do not forget to try out my favorite Mini Mode which brings the recent apps to appear on the bottom of the display in the form of tiny cards.
