Install Android Oreo Update on Snapdragon Galaxy S8 and S8+

After waiting for a long time, Verizon has finally released the much-awaited Android Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones and is the first U.S carrier to do so. Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are Android smartphones unveiled on 29 March 2017 which had received mostly positive reviews. If you haven’t received an option on your Galaxy S8/S8+ to upgrade your OS, here’s how you can upgrade your Smartphone to  Android Oreo.

This upgrade is only for the Snapdragon variants of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones since the Exynos variants of the Smartphone have already received the Android Oreo Update. The update is certified in the Play store and also passeSafetyNetetyNet, it includes the February security patch and all the typical features of Android Oreo features like the notification channels, notification snoozing, picture-in-picture mode, background app optimization and many more.

Check for Oreo OTA Update on Galaxy S8/S8+

If you have still not received the latest update to Android Oreo on your Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphone you can still check it by yourself.  Make sure you have a good internet connection for this process and start by tapping on Settings > Software update and then press on “Download updates manually“. The phone will start upgrading to Android Oreo if you are lucky enough otherwise you can follow the manual method to update to Android Oreo on Snapdragon variants of the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

Download Galaxy S8/S8+ Oreo Update Firmware

The firmware packages and update files that are given below are only for the Snapdragon variant of the Galaxy S8 and S8+, specifically G950U and G955U.

Steps to Update Galaxy S8 and S8+ to Android Oreo

The update for your smartphone should be available very soon but if you want to install it now, just follow the below steps. But before getting started, you should confirm that your smartphone is running a Snapdragon processor and not an Exynos Processor.

  • Now copy the OTA file on the SD card of your smartphone. If you do not have an SD card, you can surely skip this but you should still have it on your PC. Extract the contents of the zip file as the Odin firmware will be in zip format.
  • Power off your smartphone and then hold the Bixby button + Volume down button + power button to Reboot your smartphone into download mode.
  • Download the latest Odin from here.  Download Odin 3.13.1. Extract the downloaded ODIN zip file on your PC. You will get an ODIN .exe file in a folder.
  • Download and install the latest Samsung USB Drivers from here: Download Samsung USB Drivers.
  • Reboot Samsung Galaxy S8/S8 Plus to download mode:
    • Switch off your device. Wait for a few seconds to make sure the device is completely turned off.
    • Press and hold Bixby Button + Volume Down Button and then press the Power Button.
    • The phone will instantly boot into a blue screen. You can let go of all the buttons.
    • Now press the Volume Up button once to get into Download Mode.
    • Done!
  •  Double click on the Odin.exe file
  • Press the BL button and go to your Odin firmware folder where you have extracted your files and then click on the file starting with BL. Repeat the same for AP and CP.Galaxy-S8-Android-Oreo-Update
  • Press on the Start at the bottom of the Odin.
  • Wait till your smartphone flash and reboot. Power off your phone once again as soon as it reboots and boot into recovery mode once more by holding the Bixby button + Volume down button + power button.
  • Of your device have an SD card, select ” apply update from SD card“. You can do this with the volume rockers to navigate and the power button for selecting. Once selecting the option, you have to find the file called “update zip” and use power button to select it.
  • If your device doesn’t have an SD card, select ” apply update from ADB“. On the PC, open a command prompt by using windows key + R and typing “cmd”. When the command prompt opens up, type “adb sideload” and press enter.

  1. Hi. Thank you for the update and the how-tos. But it happens that when I clicked the link for the ‘Update.zip’ for G955U the model the update software corresponds to is the G950U. This statement was what appeared to me on the window: ‘This firmware will update your SM-G950U from version G950USQS2BRB1 to version G950USQU2CRB9’. I hope you can look into this. Thank you~
