Simply adding a recovery phone number to your Google Account can block up to 100% of automated bots, 99% of bulk phishing attacks, and 66% of targeted attacks that occurred during our investigation.
In the above figure, you can see that there is a very low number for targeted attacks. The reason behind is that the bot and phishing attacks are entirely different from targeted attacks. The “hacks for hire” in the dark Internets offer access to your account for as low as $750, explains Google. What makes them more dangerous than any other attacks is that they are specifically targeting your account. They can mask as friends, families, government or Google itself.
Such complex targeted attacks need complex protection that is why Google suggests the only enrolling in its Advanced Protection Program that requires security key is the only defense mechanism available against such attacks.
Thus, in order to protect you from such issues and attacks, Google wants your phone number to keep your data and your information safe.
