How to Root OnePlus 5

It has just been 4 days since OnePlus 5 was released and we already have a working TWRP released for the OnePlus 5. Now, you can Unlock the Bootloader, Install TWRP and Root your beloved OnePlus 5 in just a matter of few minutes. Read ahead to know more.

Prerequisites

  1. Guide to completely backup your device
  2. Download latest USB driver for your device
  3. Guide to enable Developer Options and USB Debugging
  4. Download and Install ADB and Fastboot

Unlock Bootloader on OnePlus 5

Before you proceed to install TWRP or root your OnePlus 5, the first thing you need to do is to unlock the bootloader of your OnePlus 5.

Please follow the below steps carefully:

  1. First, go to Settings > About phone and tap on the Build number (at the very bottom) 4 or 5 times until you see the text ‘You are now a developer‘. This means that the developer mode is enabled for you.
  2. Now, go to Settings > Developer options and tap on the ‘OEM unlocking‘ to enable the same.
  3. In the same screen, scroll a little bit down and enable ‘USB debugging‘. This is very important.
  4. Download the ADB and Fast boot driver from this link, and extract the contents of the zip file, if you don’t already have a working adb and fastboot environment.
  5. Reboot your phone into Fastboot Mode.
    • Power Down your OnePlus 5.
    • After the phone is completely switched off – Press and Hold the Power Button and Volume Down Buttons at the Same Time.
    • Continue Holding these two buttons past the OnePlus/Android Splash Screen that appears.
    • When the phone boots into Recovery Mode, release the power and volume down buttons.
    • Choose the Language ‘English‘.
    • In the next screen, select ‘Advanced‘ and then select ‘Reboot to fastboot‘ and in the next screen also choose the same.
    • Your phone should now be in Fastboot mode.
  6. Connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable.
  7. Go to the folder where you have the adb and fastboot files.
  8. Now, hold down the Shift Key + Right Click > Open Command Window here.
  9. Type in the below command:
    fastboot devices
  10. Once you type in the above, the list of devices will be displayed.
  11. Then enter the below command:
    fastboot oem unlock
  12. Now you will see an Unlock Bootloader Warning page. Use Volume button to select Yes and hit the Power Button to confirm the selection.oneplus-5-unlock-bootloader
  13. Now your device’s bootloader is unlocked, congratulations!

Install TWRP Recovery on OnePlus 5

Once you unlock the bootloader of your device, the next step is to install the TWRP Recovery on OnePlus 5 before installing root.

Before proceeding install TWRP on OnePlus 5, you need to download the TWRP image file for OnePlus 5. You can grab it from the below link:

Copy the downloaded TWRP file to the folder where you have extracted the adb and fastboot files.

  1. Reboot your phone into Fastboot Mode.
    • Power Down your OnePlus 5.
    • After the phone is completely switched off – Press and Hold the Power Button and Volume Down Buttons at the Same Time.
    • Continue Holding these two buttons past the OnePlus/Android Splash Screen that appears.
    • When the phone boots into Recovery Mode, release the power and volume down buttons.
    • Choose the Language ‘English‘.
    • In the next screen, select ‘Advanced‘ and then select ‘Reboot to fastboot‘ and in the next screen also choose the same.
    • Your phone should now be in Fastboot mode.
  2. Connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable.
  3. Go to the folder where you have the adb and fastboot files.
  4. Now, hold down the Shift Key + Right Click > Open Command Window here.
  5. Type in the below command:
    fastboot devices
  6. Once you type in the above, the list of devices will be displayed.
  7. Then enter the below command:
    fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-0-oneplus5.img
  8. Once the file is flashed successfully, unplug your phone from your PC and manually boot the phone into recovery by pressing Power + Volume Down button.
  9. Your phone should boot into TWRP recovery!

How to root OnePlus 5

Follow the below steps to root your OnePlus 5:

  1. Before proceeding, do keep in mind that you need to have your device’s bootloader unlocked and TWRP installed on it. If not, follow the steps in the above sections.
  2. Download the flashable SuperSu zip file from the below link:

  3. Copy the downloaded file to the internal storage of your device.
  4. Now boot your phone into TWRP Recovery:
    • Power Down your OnePlus 5.
    • After the phone is completely switched off – Press and Hold the Power Button and Volume Down Buttons at the Same Time.
    • Continue Holding these two buttons past the OnePlus/Android Splash Screen that appears.
    • When the phone boots into Recovery Mode, release the power and volume down buttons.
  5. Assuming you have successfully booted into TWRP recovery, tap on ‘Install’ from the available options. You will be asked to choose a file to flash/install. Browse and select the downloaded file and then ‘Swipe to install.’
  6. Reboot your device.
  7. Congratulations, you have successfully rooted your OnePlus 5!
