2018 has been a great year for OnePlus so far. Over one million units of the OnePlus 6 were sold within 22 days of its launch. OnePlus is one of the top 5 premium smartphone brands of 2018 with 2% of the global market share and it has also been able to establish itself as the most successful premium brand in India with 40% of the market share beating Samsung and Apple. Following their trend of two flagships for their third consecutive time, OnePlus launched the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T in a span of 6 months. Both the phones pack in almost identical hardware and software with not much to differentiate.
Both the phones pack in very identical hardware in the camera department. The main camera is a 16MP Sony IMX 519 sensor with 1.22-micron pixel size that is combined with an optically stabilized f/1.7 lens. The secondary camera is a higher resolution 20 MP Sony IMX 376K sensor with 1-micron pixel size and uses the same f/1.7 lens from the main camera but without optical image stabilization. OnePlus officials said that the secondary camera is used for applying depth-of-field effects and an improved digital zoom.
Though the phones pack in some decent camera hardware, the software processing is not up to the mark to rival with the best in the game of mobile photography. For three years in a row, Google proved that with better software processing algorithms, their phones with a single rear camera can outperform phones with multiple cameras on the rear. Renowned XDA Developer Arnova8G2 has managed to bring Google Camera from Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL with Night Sight and HDR+ to the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T. These ports pack in the following features:

The port doesn’t use the second camera and to be honest, I feel that the secondary camera on the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T are facing an identity crisis as they are just used for gathering depth of field information and help in digital zooming which can be handled from a single camera as well.

Steps To Install Google Camera on OnePlus 6/6T
- Download the respective Google Camera APK file from the link above.
- Copy/Move the downloaded file to your OnePlus 6/6T.
- Open a file manager of your choice and navigate to the copied file.
- Tap on the file to install it as normal APK. Note: You may need to enable ‘Unknown sources’ if you haven’t done that already.
And you are done. Congratulations! You just installed the Google Camera port on your OnePlus 6 or OnePlus 6T.
No root or any special steps needed. Once you install the app, you can simply open the app, grant the required permissions and start using it.
These APKs don’t require any additional configuration, but, on top of the usual options (camera sounds, video resolution, etc) there are a few things you can change (explore the settings menu!):
- HDR+ parameters: “Default” is enough for most people. Higher settings may produce better photos, especially in hard conditions, but it takes more time to process.
- HDR+ image quality: Change the jpg compression (a lower value results in smaller files, but the quality is worse).
- HDR+ RAW+JPG: Save RAW files.
- Correction of auto-exposure HDR or Auto-Exposure: Controls shutter speed, not 100% stable. Works better in low light and with HDR enhanced enabled.
- HDR+ enhanced for portrait mode: Slower, but better portrait photos.
- Disable zoom in portrait mode: By default, it zooms in a bit.
- Use Nexus6P model: Photos with better details/sharpness (and noisier).
- Since slow motion doesn’t work on Oreo, you can hide the option from the menu:
Settings > Advanced > Fix Camera API2 > “Disable video slow motion”
Android Oreo users: if you can’t see your photos from inside Google Camera, go to “Debugging and tools”, uncheck “camera.use_photos” and restart the app.
Options/options names can be changed/removed depending on the version.
