Gaming Megacorporation Tencent has pulled the plug off to its battleground game PUBG in China. According to a report by Reuters, Tencent has replaced PUBG with their “More Patriotic” version of the game.
The difference between both the game would be that the new game is called “Game For Peace”. Also, this new game has been granted permission to generate revenue. This approval was obtained by Tencent in April 2019. The main reason to shut down PUBG in China is that the Chinese Government did not allow in-app purchases. PUBG was denied revenue approval many times within a year.
Moreover, according to analysts, if Chinese PUBG Players move to the new “Game For Peace”, it will generate close to 8 to 10 billion yuan ($1.18 to $1.48 billion) in annual revenue. This is a huge amount which Tencent was not able to generate from PUBG.
According to the IHS Markit games analyst Cui Chenyu referring to the new game, he stated that “It’s almost exactly the same. The gameplay, the background, the graphic design, and the characters, they’re almost the same.” He further commented that user reviews indicated that Game of Peace is almost like PUBG.
In the official website of Tencent, they stated (in Chinese) that the Game ForPeace is a tactical shooting game which pays “a tribute to the blue sky warriors that guard our country’s airspace”. It refers to the People’s Liberation Army Air Force of China.
In Chinese Twitter, “PUBG is Gone” received over 300 clicks and was the most trending topic on Weibo (Chinese Twitter). The spokesperson from Bluehole (Partner of Tencent), also declined to comment further, saying that the company is looking into the status of PUBG in China.
